MFA Degree Show “Shifting Spaces” Dennis Bato

MFA Degree Show "Shifting Spaces" Dennis Bato

Urbanization aims for growth and poverty reduction with 80 percent of its economic development concentrated in cities. Global restructuring or urbanization is a double process of integration and social exclusion on the other.  Some of its products were the marginalized, the deinstitutionalized, expansion of urban settlements tied up with the issues of criminality, unemployment, and the flux of city migrants in hopes of better living conditions to name a few. The restructuring does not only focus its effects on the traditional poor but also affects people belonging to other classes with higher educational and social skills. As the development in the cities progresses, the growth of the marginalized communities also progresses. The creation of urban marginalized communities is said to have been the product of this restructuring. Developmental exclusion pushed these communities to create ways on how they may be able to continue to subsist more often through illegal means that are said to be morally acceptable known as “Quiet Encroachment”. They seek decency in their daily realities by adapting to consequences in their way of living, participating in socio-economic informality, and creating their own adaptable spaces.

The exhibition explores the idea of the production of social space in the urban marginalized communities within Metro Manila specifically in Camarin Caloocan. The artist looks at how these urban marginalized spaces adapt and shift from the structure imposed by the society in order to have access to one of human’s essential needs; shelter. From an ordinary encroached space to a place that is more than just a shelter; the essence of home . The exhibition aims to reflect these issues through Anamorphic constructions using Autoconstruccion.

In Loving Memory of Araceli Limcaco-Dans

In Loving Memory of Araceli Limcaco-Dans

(December 9, 1929-May 18, 2024)

May 19, 2024

The UP College of Fine Arts deeply condoles with the family and friends of Araceli Limcaco-Dans: an exemplary visual artist, pioneering arts educator, and beloved mentor to generations of artists.

Mentored by Fernando Amorsolo, Dans finished her degree in Painting from the UP College of Fine Arts in 1950. She dedicated nearly eight decades of her life to teaching and painting, sharing her art through more than a hundred group and solo exhibitions.

A trailblazer in the field of art education, she spent the first two decades of her merging painting and pedagogy while raising a family of 10 with Engr. Jose P. Dans. After graduating from UP, she founded the Department of Fine Arts of the Philippine Women’s University in 1950 and reorganized the art program of the Ateneo Grade School department in 1963. She introduced innovations to the teaching of art through her work as a studio teacher with the Ateneo Educational Television in 1964-1968 and co-founded with Brenda Fajardo the Philippine Art Educators Association in 1968.

An artist who worked across different media, from oil to watercolor, she is most celebrated for realistic still life paintings produced since the 1980s. Her series of works re-configuring calado (intricate and heavy embroidery) and local flora arrangements now has its place in the remarkable history of Philippine modern painting.

We are grateful for her leadership and love for the art community, remembering her years serving as a very dedicated President of the UP College of Fine Arts Alumni Association. For her achievements as both a painter and art educator, she was recognized with the Cultural Center of the Philippines Centennial Honors for the Arts, the UP Alumni Association Award, and many more distinctions.

Farewell, Cheloy Dans. Your lifelong commitment to art and your remarkable example of strength, care, and love continues to inspire and comfort us all.

Art Exhibit in honor of Labor Day 2024 opens at the UP Fine Arts Gallery

Opening on May 17 (Friday), 5:00 P.M.

The UP Fine Arts Gallery invites you to the opening of Warm Bodies II: On Art, Labor, and Proletarian Struggle, in solidarity with Labor Day 2024.

The exhibition features works on Philippine labor, its movements, histories, or contexts by Grace Corpuz, Maan de Loyola, Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP), Edgar Talusan Fernandez, and Tambisan sa Sining in conversation with works in the CFA Permanent Art Collection by Leo Abaya, Amado Hidalgo, Julius Samson, and Phyllis Zaballero.

Curated by Lisa Ito-Tapang, the exhibit reflects on how the faces of Philippine labor are varied and encompass the breadth of classes, regions, and histories.  The exhibition illustrates how cultural work and institutional collections intersect to reflect on the lives of the working classes and masses in conversation with contemporary Philippine artists and art collectives actively engaged in the theorization, immersion, or engagement with labor.

It is a second part of the exhibition Warm Bodies: On Defending the Right to Dissent earlier in January to February 2024 on the right to freedom of expression. Warm Bodies is also the second show in the Condition Reporting series of the UP Fine Arts Gallery, starting in 2024, that activates the UPCFA Permanent Art Collection and positions it in meaningful conversation with contemporary artworks, current practices, and extant archives.

We invite the public to the opening on May 17(Friday), 5:00 P.M. at the G1 Lobby. The exhibit will be on view until May 31 at Gallery Two, UP Fine Arts Gallery,  Arts & Design Building West Hall, UP College of Fine Arts, University of the Philippines Diliman. Gallery hours from Tuesdays to Saturdays, 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.

Indio-Genius! Tatlong Alamat ng Tagumpay

Indio-Genius! Tatlong Alamat ng Tagumpay

Kidlat Tahimik
April 23 – May 23, 2024 Atrium, UP Fine Arts Gallery

The UP College of Fine Arts (UPCFA) and the UP Fine Arts Gallery warmly welcome National Artist for Film Kidlat Tahimik with a monumental exhibition of three installation works titled Indio-Genius! Tatlong Alamat ng Tagumpay opening on April 23, 4:30 PM.

The exhibit commemorates the upcoming 503rd anniversary of the Battle of Mactan which felled the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan (FM) on April 27, 1521, in Cebu— an event that set into motion a history of local and indigenous resistance to foreign rule and ushered in a nascent turn towards colonial rule and nationalism.

The exhibit unveils a suite of three installations by the artist, which were included in important exhibitions by the artist from 2021 to 2023. At the UP Fine Arts Gallery, these three works are presented as the Bagong Alamat series:

• Bagong Alamat 1: Sagupaan ng Dalawang Bathala ng Hanging: Ifugao Goddess of the Wind Inhabian Blows Down Hollywood Goddess of the Wind Marilyn Monroe

• Bagong Alamat 2: Tsunami of Protectors Stops Trojan Horse of Hollywood
• Bagong Alamat 3: Bulakna (Wife of Lapu-Lapu) Strikes Down Ferdinand

Magellan with an Arnis Stick

The works were previously shown from October 20, 2021, to March 6, 2022, at the “Magellan, Marilyn, Mickey & Fr. Dámaso. 500 Years of Conquistador RockStars” exhibit at the Palacio de Cristal del Retiro, Madrid, built in 1887 to showcase Philippine flora and fauna at the Exposición General de Las Islas Filipinas. They were then featured in the artist’s homecoming exhibition, “INDIO-GENIUS: 500 Taon ng Labanang Kultural (1521-2021)” in 2023 at the National Museum of Anthropology in Manila.

These works are part of the artist’s installations which delve into the cultural struggles and aspirations of the Filipino people, deploying indigenous materials, traditions, and narratives to comment on the persistence of cultural imperialism and neocolonialism. In presenting counter-mythologies and alternative stories rooted in local history and events, Kidlat Tahimik challenges the public to reclaim narratives of resistance.

The gallery is open to the public from Tuesdays to Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Inquiries may be sent to Lisa Ito-Tapang, curator of the UP Fine Arts Gallery, through cfagallery.upd@up.edu.ph.

As a university-based gallery dedicated to creative pedagogy and practice, the UP Fine Arts Gallery (Parola) affirms how art, learning, and emancipatory practice are interconnected. We ended the First Semester of the Academic Year (AY) 2023-2024 last January with 45 projects, consisting of 18 art exhibitions, 16 talks and/or workshops, and 11 events. We warmly welcomed the Second Semester of AY 2023-2024 last February with continuous programming centered on the celebration of the arts, gender, and their vital role in asserting development and rights.

We opened National Arts Month with eight exhibitions and daily workshops, artist talks, discussions, drawing and art production sessions. These exhibits are Empires of Memory, The Aesthetics of Engagement, Warm Bodies: Defending the Right to Dissent, Bawal ang Malungkot: Retrospective Series of Jose Alberto Tañedo (1953-2021), Dito at Doon: UPCFA Annual Students’ Show, Walk in her Shoes, Maglingkod at Magpahinungod, and Bisita Planeta. These highlighted the innovative and interdisciplinary works of our undergraduate and MFA students and faculty and the creative practice of social movements across Philippine history.

We put the spotlight on the importance of National Women’s Month with the group exhibitions Lulan, Ulila, Liham, Alaga, Naman, organized by the ILCP Art Space based in Negros Oriental, Matereality, group exhibit on the diverse visual languages of women artists, and Reflections on Visibility, featuring selections from the Permanent Collection of the UP College of Fine Arts. This was complemented with weekend and Monday activities organized by the artists and gender advocates.

We express gratitude for the strong support of our partner institutions, organizations, and individuals, the untiring efforts of the FA Gallery staff, interns and student assistants, and the guidance of Dean Marc San Valentin and College Secretary Manolo Sicat, the department chairs, preventive conservation expert June Poticar-Dalisay, and Gallery Committee members Prof. Mitzi Marie Aguilar-Reyes, Assoc. Prof. Jamel Obnamia, Assoc. Prof. Dayang Yraola, Asst. Prof. Sandra Dans, Mr. Rommel Joson, Mr. Ian Carlo Jaucian, and Assoc. Prof. Fortunato Dela Peña. As we prepare for the Lenten and Reading Breaks, we invite you all to continue participating in Parola’s programs when we resume with new events and exhibits in April.

𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 💗 : Curated by Annie Pacaña

The exhibition’s title, Matereality, comprises three words: mater, reality, and materiality. This play on words encapsulates the curator’s intention to shake the frame that defines women’s lives, particularly that of mothers, by gathering and presenting diverse visual languages created by women artists. The exhibition was first held at Artinformal in Greenhills in April 2022. This exhibition marks its second iteration, which brings together some of the artists from the previous edition along with new ones. In the proposal, the curator Annie Pacaña wrote, “[the second iteration] tackles themes of work-life-art balance/counterbalance/imbalance that artists who are mothers experience daily.” The theme brings to mind our inclination to control time to improve our quality of life.

𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 opens this March 8, 2024, at the Multipurpose Hall of the UP Fine Arts Gallery.

March 8 | 5 PM | Opening reception

March 8 | 7 PM | Outdoor projection

FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Walk-in guests are warmly welcome from Tuesdays to Saturdays, 9 AM – 4 PM. For bookings, visit bit.ly/ParolaVisitorsForm or email us at cfagallery.upd@up.edu.ph.
