WARM BODIES: Defending the Right to Dissent
An Exhibit on Freedom of Expression
Opening on January 26 (Friday), 4:30 p.m.
January 26 – February 17, 2024 | UP Fine Arts Gallery

Art Exhibit on Freedom of Expression to open at UP Fine Arts Gallery, Diliman

The UP Fine Arts Gallery in cooperation with the Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP), invites you to the opening of WARM BODIES, an exhibit that explores how artists and cultural workers upheld freedom of expression amid challenging and dark times.

As we anticipate the official state visit of the United Nations Special Rapporter on Freedom of Opinion and Expression Irene Khan this week, the exhibit highlights this critical moment where the country’s record of upholding freedom of expression as a universal right is reviewed. That is was an artist—National Artist for Film and CAP founding Chairperson Lino Brocka (1939-1991)—who is credited to have the word “expression” included in the 1987 Philippine Constitution is not lost to a new generation of artists, who continue to stand against censorship, political repression, poor governance, and injustice today.

Curated by Lisa Ito, Warm Bodies features works from the UPCFA Permanent Art Collection by BenCab, Alfredo Liongoren, Elmer Borlongan, Imelda Cajipe-Endaya, and Leonilo Doloricon in conversation with new works by Abel Angelo & Jeune Aramburo (CAP), Boyet de Mesa, Ding Royales, George Burchett, Jef Carnay, Luke Warm, Max Santiago (BAYAN), Patreng Non, Raffy Lerma, RESBAK, Tarantadong Kalbo, Tokwa Peñaflorida, Toym Imao, and Worn Expressions.

The exhibition activates a conversation between the UPCFA’s Permanent Art Collection and works which served as “objects of demonstration” and “disobedient objects”, upacking the crises on human rights and reflects on how the struggle for freedom of expression and the redress of social grievances cuts and continues through time.

Warm Bodies is the first show in the Condition Reporting exhibition series of the UP Fine Arts Gallery, starting in 2024, that activates the Permanent Art Collection (PAC) of the UP College of Fine Arts and positions it in meaningful conversation with contemporary artworks, current practices, and extant archives.

The exhibit welcomes National Arts Month this February with “Empires of Memory”, a group exhibition of Lucylle Cawaling, Rommel Joson, Manuel Mesina III, Julien Tan, and Teta Tulay, and “The Aesthetics of Engagement” with Samantha Feleo and Jenny Suarez. The exhibit will be on view until February 17 at the Gallery Two, UP Fine Arts Gallery, Arts & Design Building West Hall, College of Fine Arts, University of the Philippines Diliman. Gallery hours from Tuesdays to Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

We invite the public to the opening program will be on Jan. 26 (Friday), 4:30 p.m. at the G1 Lobby and will be held by CAP with the cooperation of the Bulwagan ng Dangal, Liongoren Post, Tin-aw Gallery, and Presidential Committee for Culture and the Arts in relation to the UP Day of Remembrance. Join us as we honor the past, resist the present, and fight for the right to express ourselves on January 26, 2024, from 5 pm to 7 pm, at the UP Fine Arts Gallery. #

Alfredo A. Liongoren Retrospective Exhibition

Layers and Layers of the Self Peeled Through
Alfredo A. Liongoren Retrospective Exhibition

The UP Fine Arts Gallery cordially invites everyone this coming September 19, 4 PM, for the opening of Layers and Layers of the Self Peeled Through

Alfredo A. Liongoren’s retrospective exhibition brings together artworks from six decades of his practice: starting from his student years at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts in the early 1960s, to the succeeding decades—which have been typified by shifts between varying degrees of abstraction and figuration, and later, explorations with the overtly socio-critical and the performative. Laid down in themes and supplemented with archival materials, his artworks are treated as points within a matrix that one may trace along.

The exhibition will be open to the public from September 19 to October 6 at Galleries One, Two, and the Multi-purpose Hall of the UP Fine Arts Gallery.

Walk-in guests are welcome from Tuesdays to Saturdays, 9 AM – 4 PM.

Benjie Cabangis, Reelin’ in the Years

The UP Fine Arts Gallery Legacy Series is proud to present Professor Emeritus BENJAMIN ISLA CABANGIS’ 31st Solo Exhibit “Benjie Cabangis, Reelin’ in the Years” featuring works from 1976 to 2023 at the Gallery One, Gallery Two and Multipurpose Hall of Parola. It will be launched on March 1, 2023, 4.30PM, and will run until March 31, 4PM.

“There is an opportunity to slow down when I draw, and to immerse myself in the process. My art making is a way to discover, reflect on, and express myself. It’s like writing a journal or keeping a diary, but with lines and marks instead of words.” (Cabangis)

[The UP Fine Arts Gallery Legacy Series is an exhibition series featuring works of retired and former professors of the U.P. Diliman College of Fine Arts. The exhibition ceremonially marks the lasting relationship of the mentor to generations of artists as life-long learners. Benjie Cabangis is the fourth feature– acknowledging his contributions as Professor Emeritus, former Chair of the Department of Studio Arts, and former curator of Corredor Gallery (UP Fine Arts Gallery). Earlier exhibits in the series were for Leonilo Doloricon (Visual Communication Professor and former Dean), Johnny Reynoso (Visual Communication Professor), and Yasmin Almonte (Studio Arts Professor).

ALPAS

Alpas: Ang Pagsilakbo ng Sining sa Panahon ng Pandemya is the Thesis exhibit of the 2021 graduating batch of Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Communication) program of the UP College of Fine Arts. Alpas is a virtual exhibit showcasing creative projects developed during the school year 2020-2021, as the culminating project of Visual Communication students. It was launched on July 10, 2021, 6pm.

On their final year, the students embark on their research for a visual communication thesis: gathering data, establishing a theoretical framework, applying appropriate research methodologies, analyzing data and developing a creative proposal to recommend as a solution to their thesis problem, and finally, successfully  presenting and defending their works against a panel of industry experts. The 2021 batch of students have fulfilled this in the midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic, during the remote teaching and learning set-up of the University.

The UPCFA proudly present the works from different clusters of Visual Communication: Illustration, Publication & Graphic Design, Moving Images, Visual Communication Campaigns, and Interactive Media. Let this be a testament to their learnings from the University, and to their aspirations as proactive members of Philippine society.
