ID Student’s Thesis Shortlisted for James Dyson Award 2023

Congratulations to Franchezka Ruby Oxales, a graduate of the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Industrial Design) program! Ms. Oxales was selected as one of the National Runners-up for this year’s James Dyson Award (JDA), a prestigious award named after the founder of the renowned technology company Dyson Ltd.

As her Industrial Design thesis project, Ms. Oxales developed SugarBuddy to help Down Syndrome patients monitor their diabetes. A wrist-worn device, SugarBuddy aims to guide its users in managing their diabetes through animated steps, LED lights, and verbal instructions to promote self-care and routine development.

Along with the National Winner from Mapua University and the other National Runner-up from the University of San Carlos, Ms. Oxales will enter the next stage, where a panel of Dyson Engineers will review, select, and shortlist the Top 20 design entries. This shortlist will then be forwarded to Sir James Dyson, who will personally select the international winners and runners-up.

Congratulations again to Franchezka Ruby Oxales! May her success in the competition inspire our Industrial Design students to aspire for excellence and become change agents through design!

(A Walkthrough & Workshop)
with Annie Pacaña
March 25 (Saturday), 1:00 – 5:00 p.m
UP Fine Arts Gallery (Multipurpose Hall)

We invite you to an early afternoon talk that will walk you through the process of making storybooks, from writing and illustrating stories to having them published. This will be followed by a workshop on making wordless picture books, inspired by the artist-author’s making of “Ang Bata sa Buwan”. The talk is free and open to the public. Participants (16 yrs old and above) joining the workshop are requested to bring your own coloring materials (your choice of dry media). You may opt to sign up for workshop slots through this link: https://bit.ly CreatingChildrensPictureBooks

The two workshops are part of the project titled “Limbag at Likhang Kamay: Papel ngKababaihang Manlilikha sa Pamumulat” for the UP Diliman Arts and Culture Festival 2023 and National Women’s Month in March.

The project explores how women artists have wielded paper, among the most fragile of materials, towards pamumulat: connecting the personal and the political through the written page, painting, and printmaking, writ large, and highlights the special role and contribution of women as artists and cultural workers.

It is a pilot project of the UPCFA GAD Committee in cooperation with the UP Fine Arts Gallery and the Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP).

The first leg was an artist talk, “Ano’ng Papel Mo? Mga Kwento ng Pagmulat at Pagyabong”, last March 3 and a workshop on Basic Relief Printmaking with Color Techniques with Ambie Abaño last March 10. For inquiries, contact us at limbagatlikhangkamay@gmail.com. Please stay tuned for updates through the page of the UPCFA GAD Committee.
